"Images of America was our theme,
and we attempted to shuttle the visitor back and forth in
time and through a series of differentiated spaces on various
planes, but always allowing him to know where he was by giving
him glimpses of other exhibits all around him. The visitor
who happened to be looking at a display of American sports
could also see Colonial portaits, the Lunar Module, photographs
of East Harlem and a 20-foot-high moving ice-bag by Claes
Oldenburg, thus gaining some sense of the diversity and complexity
of live in the United States."
